You grow and birth a human and now you are producing milk to feed it and recovering from the birth. Recover may be from a long labor, a tear or hemorrhage. Your body needs support in recovering in order to prevent an infection, to balance your hormones, and to have energy.

Below are 6 supplements that I recommend to moms and are key for body healing, preventing postpartum depression, and milk production.

1. Cod Liver Oil
The Weston A. Price Foundation recommends 20,000 IU of vitamin A and 2,000 IU of vitamin D from cod liver oil during pregnancy and in the postpartum. This can be obtained from 1¾ teaspoons of the high-vitamin variety. This amount also supplies about two grams of omega-3 fatty acids—the same amount shown in one study to prevent premature delivery. Both Green Pasture and Nordic Naturals are good options for cod liver oil. Cod liver oil is also the best source of DHA and EPA both essentail fatty acids.

Omega-3 EFA levels in fetuses and infants is directly correlated to:

  • Intelligence, IQ, comprehension, cognition, vocabulary (at 9 month to 5 years)

  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (AHDH)

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

  • Attention, learning, behavior, problem solving

  • Visual acuity

  • Chronic diseases: diabetes, asthma, Cystic Fibrosis, Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)

  • Immune function, disease prevention

  • Allergies

Be aware that many brands of cod liver oil are processed to remove all the vitamins A and D and then have synthetic vitamins A and D added back in. These products should be completely avoided as the synthetic versions of A and D are toxic. Vitamin A combined with vitamin D in cod liver oil can be taken at much higher does without toxic effects.

2. Probiotics
Probiotics offer a powerhouse of health benefits. They support both you and your baby’s immune system and digestion, prevent allergies and skin problems, and lower the risk of autoimmune conditions. Plus they support your emotional health. Studies have shown the benefits of Lactobacillus Reuteri probiotic in decreasing colic. An all-around good probiotic that contains Lactobacillus Reuteri is Garden of Life Raw Probiotic for women (Click my link affiliate link to get it from Amazon). It does need to be refrigerated. I also recommend as excellent probiotics Prescript Assist and Bio Kult.

3. Vitamin-Mineral-Antioxidantssupplements for postpartum
I recommend all moms be on a whole food vitamin and mineral and antioxidant throughout pregnancy and as long as they are nursing. My favorite is a brand called Wholistic Solutions. Their Vitamin Mineral Antioxidant supplement is the only supplement that everyone I’ve had take it says they feel good on it. It is made from organic whole food ingredients and processed at less than 100 degrees to maintain the enzymes. This is also what I recommend women take as part of their prenatal regimen. Taking this equates to eating the most nutritious vegetables and live nutrients several times a day.

4. Calcium and Magnesium
They are key in breast milk production and balancing emotions. They dramatically help with afterbirth pains in the first few days and the healing process of tissues. The brands I like and recommend are whole food supplements. They are Wholistic Solutions Calcium Plus which includes magnesium, D3 and K2 and Standard Process Cal Mag.

5. B Vitamins
These help prevent postpartum depression, support healthy breast milk, and healthy infant vitamin B levels. Levels of B Vitamins in infants are directly related to the vitamin status of the mom. B vitamins are the energy of life and will help you thrive, not just survive, in postpartum. I recommend women take a folate not folic acid. My favorite B is also from Wholistic Solutons and is a mythl B which has already activated B vitamins.

6. ChlorophyllSupplements for the postpartum
If you have hemorrhaged chlorophyll is a must, but really, every mom in postpartum would benefit from chlorophyll. I recommend chlorophyll for the first 6 weeks, 3 tablespoons a day. You can also take it in capsules if you don’t like the taste. I love Standard Process Supplements, but whatever you purchase make sure it is sourced well; that means knowing where it comes from. Chlorophyll helps prevent infection, supports your liver, and increases oxygen in the blood. You can increase the dosage to 6 tablespoons a day if you are anemic. Continue to take chlorophyll through the first 6 weeks postpartum.

These 6 vitamins are what I recommend every mom be on during the postpartum. I also recommend they be on them during pregnancy and really anytime. They are such a good foundation for health.
